A 36-year-old driver of a gold-buying agent in Dunkwa-on- Offin in the Central Region, Lawrence Bekoe, is wanted by the police for allegedly bolting with an amount of GH?600,000 belonging to the company.

Bekoe, popularly known as Piipii, was on his daily errand with his boss enroute to Bogoso in the Western Region to take delivery of consignments they had secured.

On the way, his boss, an Indian, asked him to stop so he could take some few minutes off to pass water, but as soon as he got down, the driver sped off with the Nissan Hard Body pickup van with registration number GN 686 -14 and then abandoned the vehicle at the outskirts of Bogoso and ran away with the money.

The Indian then went to the police to report the case.

Lawrence Bekoe?s boss, whom he was travelling with, was also arrested but later released on bail.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the Indian, whose identity was not immediately known, was on board the vehicle which was traveling from Dunkwa-on-Offin to Bogoso with the money meant for the purchase of gold.

When contacted, DSP Timothy Dasa, Prestea District Police Commander, confirmed the incident but asked DAILY GUIDE to contact the Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Quainoo, for details.

When the paper called DCOP Quainoo, he could not immediately give the name of the company and that of the Indian but confirmed that he (the Indian) had been arrested and detained.

He explained that the police were marveled at the behaviour of the Indian and could not fathom why the company did not seek police escort whenever they were travelling with huge sums of money.

?How can you put such huge sums of money in a vehicle and drive to a place without telling the police or looking for security? So I have asked that he should be detained pending further investigations,? the police chief said.

DCOP Quainoo indicated that the police were looking for the driver, stressing that the case looked bizarre.

DSP Timothy Dasa said the police had begun full-scale investigations into the case.

Meanwhile, the Dunkwa-on-Offin Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Dela, has told DAILY GUIDE that two persons had been arrested in connection with the alleged theft and would be transferred to the Bogoso Police Station where the case was reported.

The company has put a GH?20,000 ransom on Lawrence Bekoe?s head to be given to anyone who would help in his arrest.

He is believed to be hiding around Agona Swedru in the Central Region, where he purportedly hails from.

It would be recalled that an Indian gold-buying entity called Iqbal and Gogo Gold Company at Akyempem near Tarkwa, was robbed twice on September 8 and October 9, 2013 of monies totalling GH?900,000.

The then Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, invited the Indians to his office in Sekondi and queried them as to why they did not heed to the directive to always seek police escort whenever they were carrying huge sums of money to purchase gold.
