The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has decried the wave of violence, which it said, was being perpetrated by members of the Action Congress of Nigeria party (ACN) in Akwa Ibom state during the local government elections.

The elections, according to report, were characterised by ballot box snatching and hooliganism resulting in the loss of lives.

The PDP spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh, warned the leadership of the ACN to desist from the violent acts which has become their signature.

He reminded the ACN that their party is no longer Action Group which was known for violence.

“It appears that the ACN members are misguided by the word ‘Action’ in their name which they believe is synonymous with war, fighting, blackmail, abuse and intimidation. The ACN has relied on these archaic, barbaric and terror- related guerrilla tactics to gain undue and undeserved political advantage in the past. But all that will no longer work, starting from the imminent elections in Edo State. This is a promise from the PDP,” he said.

According to Metuh, ACN has a history of violence which was evident in Ondo State earlier this year when one of their party’s chieftain, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, publicly threatened the Labour Party with more violence following a day of violent clashes between supporters of both parties in Akure.

He said: “Residents of the communities in Edo State can also testify to the threats and abusive statements by Governor Adams Oshiomhole in all his recent rallies during which he repeatedly spits fire and brimstone, assuming the posture of a doomsday prophet and lacking the decency and diplomatic finesse expected of someone occupying an exalted leadership position.

Metuh said the Edo State people did not deserve such at this critical time when “they are yearning for a change that would restore their state to its lost glory and pride among other states in the country.”

Metuh called on all Nigerians to reject the ugly trend of violence which has always been a threat to democracy in past republics.

“We believe that the outcome of the election is not as important as the protection of human lives and that will always remain our focus,” he said.

He, however, called on relevant security authorities and the election monitors, both international and local, to do everything possible “to ensure a peaceful transparent election and protect the lives and property of Edo people from the ever rampaging and blood- thirsty ACN leadership and members.”
