Mr Demordzi, a member of the Select Committee on Food and Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, said this at a meeting with members of Bukum Believers Association, a group of mainly fishermen at Bortianor in the Ga South Municipality.

The group, with about 200 members, was formed to seek the welfare and the sanitation needs of the community.

Members periodically organise clean up exercises and have put up a cold store through their pre-mix management committee to generate income for the association.

Educating them on the fishing regulations, light fishing and its negative effects on fish stock of the country, Mr Demordzi advised the fishermen to stop light fishing which had become rampant in the area.

He said when light was used in fishing it attracted fingerlings and with time, the water bodies might not have enough fishes.

The MP called on the Ministry of Fisheries to speed up the formation of community based monitoring committees at the various landing beaches to curb the practice.

?I will also want to use the opportunity to commend the Ministry for putting in place vessel monitoring system to check activities of vessels on the high sea,? he added.
