Over 75,000 foreign tourists have visited Madagascar since the start of this year, the prime minister’s office said on Thursday.
It added that a tourism police unit had been set up to provide security for the 650 operators in the tourism sector.
Director general of Madagascar’s tourism department, Tokiaritefy Rabeson, said the police unit was providing protection for tourists, hotels as well as local populations.
Rabeson said the country’s tourism ministry was targeting 300, 000 tourists in the year 2015.
Latest statistics from the World Bank show that 256,000 tourists visited Madagascar in 2012 against 196,000 in 2013.
Analysts say Madagascar’s tourism sector seems to be getting back on its feet due to the restoration of political stability. Enditem
