Oredo LG Council Is Burning Up

There was tension yesterday at Oredo Local Government Council secretariat in Benin City, as suspected political thugs stormed the council to protect the council chairman, Mr. Osaro Obaze from allegedly being impeached by his councillors.

The councillors who had impeached the leader of the legislative arm, Mr Monday Inoma Ebegbai and his deputy Enshe Esobaifo last Thursday, electing Mr. Nohayi Obaseki as the new Leader of the House, debunked the allegation that they intend to impeach the chairman of the Council, Mr Obaze.

They asserted that majority of the councillors, 8 out of twelve passed a vote of no confidence on the former leader due to his alleged high handedness and dictatorial tendencies in the affairs of the legislative arm.

However, the council boss, Mr Obazee who addressed newsmen yesterday said he does not recognize any leadership change in the legislative arm, asserting that ?the only person I know as the Leader is Monday Inoma Ebegbai and I am not aware of any problem that will warrant impeachment?.

Asked about the presence of thugs in the council, he said that ?they are party youths who heard that they want to impeach me so they came on solidarity. But I have asked them to go that there is no cause for alarm?.

However, the newly elected Speaker, Obaseki told newsmen that ?We made changes in the legislative arm on Thursday 24, July, 2014. We are 12 councillors and the House rules states that two third, meaning, at least eight members can move a motion for impeachment of the Leader or Deputy Leader.

?That is exactly what happened on that day.

A motion was moved by by Hon.Dan Imafidon Ize-Iyamu, representing ward 10 and it was seconded by Hon. Osayeni Ukato, the only PDP councillor representing ward 6″.

While expressing shock that they were chased away at the council while trying to gain entrance into their offices by alleged political thugs, Obaseki said their action has nothing to do with the Executive chairman.

?We have good working relationship with him. He is a nice man; it is just that we need a change in the legislative arm and that change has been effected and that is all?, he declared.
