Of Morning Devotion and Evening Benediction

Protestants. Others were Muslims

I am a Christian. A Roman Catholic who is not exactly adherent to the Vatican doctrine.

I went to Notre Dame Seminary secondary school. I was in class with people who were not catholic from home. Some were Protestants. Others were Muslims who put Islam aside while we were in school. Many were African traditional religious fellows.
Even as a catholic from home, morning devotion and morning mass was an irritating routine that some of us were too gladly willing to evade. It normally started from 5 am when sleep is truly sweet.

Nobody was exempt from morning devotion because everybody was expected to be a catholic. The school did not knowingly admit non ? Catholics.

Therefore, people who wanted to enjoy the prestige of Notre Dame education ? the best secondary school in the upper east region of ghana and one of the best in Ghana ? temporarily converted to Catholicism and adhered not only to the morning devotion and mass but also to the benediction of Sunday evenings.

At the end of our studies in Notre Dame, some mates ?completed? their Catholicism. Some went back to traditional African religion. Others to Protestant Christianity, whiles others went fully back to Islam. And yes, some also became Rastafarians!! A few became Roman Catholic priests.

Interestingly, I have never met any of my secondary school mates who have ever expressed regret for attending Notre Dame.

After several years, the strictness, discipline, dedication, Passion, integrity,  etc that was ?forced? on us by the Vatican ? who by the way built their own schools and run them with their own money ? begin to bear fruits in our lives and we completely forget the inconveniences we went through during training.

If people decide to send their children to public schools, nobody will oblige them to follow any particular religious code. But if people decide to choose ?catholic education? or ?Methodist education? or Pentecostal education?, those people should be reasonably prepared to get a full package and not a choose ? and ? pick situation. This is my opinion on this matter.
