Link Community Development (LCD), an NGO, has disclosed that there is a deficit of about 23.1 per cent of children of school going age in the Talensi and Nabdam Districts, who are not enrolled.

Dr Kennedy Quaigrain, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LCD, who made this known, said Talensi and Nabdam districts have a net enrollment of 76.9 per cent, which means that the remaining children are not in school.

He said access to quality education is paramount in attaining the socio-economic development of the country and should not be compromised.

Dr Quaigrain made the disclosure at Gbeogo in the Upper East Region, when he addressed stakeholders in education.

He urged the stakeholders to make efforts to retain the number of children in school, and strive to get remaining children enrolled.

Giving a breakdown of performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the two districts, Dr Quaingrain indicated that in  2008  the score was 53.70 per cent , 44.21 in 2009 and in 2010 students performance dropped to 27.49 while in 2011 it went up by 38.80 per cent.

He called on the District Chief Executives (DCEs) of the two districts and all duty bearers to focus on the promotion of education and observe how teachers spend their time with pupils.

Mrs Vivian Anafo, DCE for the newly created Nabdam District said in an interview that the trend of performance of students is not satisfactory and appealed to teachers to do their work passionately because education is the bedrock for development.

She said the then Talensi-Nabdam Districts sponsored 255 teacher trainees and 55 nurses in 2009 to pursue their professional courses.
