VIOLENCE HAS NO PLACE IN DEMOCRATIC POLITICS

Good afternoon.

I am here to discuss and condemn the violent activities that occurred yesterday; the deliberate provocation planned and executed by the NDC to disrupt a peaceful campaign and election process and thus intimidate citizens from freely and fairly casting their ballots on December 7.

Let me recap for you the event that took place in Kumasi, specifically in Ash Town. NPP MP Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was campaigning house-to-house, sharing with his constituents the Nana Akufo-Addo?s vision to move Ghana forward and transform our economy.

A gun-toting youth followed them and fired gunshots at the MP and his supporters in a vain attempt to frighten the Hon. Prempeh, as well as to intimidate the town?s brave and resilient residents.

But that was not all. This display of unnecessary bravado was followed later in the day by about 10 NDC ?machomen?, who stormed the same neighbourhood and unleashed fear and terror.

To be clear: the NPP will not stand by while gun-toting NDC-sponsored thugs terrorize citizens and try to intimidate an MP from delivering Nana Addo?s positive message to change now and move Ghana forward. Violence has no place in our country and the NDC actions yesterday threaten to destroy Ghana?s reputation as a stable and peaceful democracy. We call on the Police Service to be bold and up to an impartial maintenance of law and order to preserve the peace.

We also hasten to note that such violent incidents always seem to fall on the heels of a visit of President John Mahama to an area of NPP support. This is no coincidence. There is a clear and obvious correlation between the desperate campaign of His Excellency President John Mahama and the violence perpetrated by his supporters in NPP strongholds.

When Ghanaians go to vote next Friday, the President is fully aware that ? if the election is decided upon the issues and the track record of NDC performance ? he has zero hope of victory. There is no way that the people of this country ? who have seen the quality of education go down while the cost goes up, who have seen the prices of basic goods double, who have seen the coffers of the NDC overflowing with oil money but no jobs for Ghanaians, and who have seen the their children and grandchildren saddled with debt while Woyome lives a jet-set lifestyle ? will give another four years to the utter failure that is the Mills/Mahama/Amissah-Arthur government.

Knowing that they can?t win based on the issues, the NDC mounted a campaign of pathetic lies, trying to fool the people with fantasies about their own accomplishments, which are virtually none, and dirty lies about the NPP manifesto. But that did not work. Their lies have fallen on deaf ears and their fantasies flatly rejected.

So that leaves the NDC with two options: cheat and rig the election, which they are actively trying to do but will not succeed, or threaten the lives of voters so that they can outright steal the election, which yesterday?s event proved that they are also trying to do.

Neither of these things will happen.

The NPP parliamentary candidates will not be intimidated.

The resilient people of Ash Town and of Kumasi will not be intimidated.

The brave people of the Ashanti region will not be intimidated.

And, most of all, our flag bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED.

He will not back down from his call for free, fair and peaceful elections. He will continue to push forward with the NPP vision to transform Ghana?s economy and provide free SHS and vocational education to all Ghanaian children. And so will our slate of parliamentary candidates in all 10 regions.

So our message to the NDC thugs: don?t even think about it. Your shameful and violent actions will not be permitted to destroy the stable and peaceful democracy we enjoy. And it is not just the NPP who will stop you. It is all the Ghanaian people who stand against you and your dirty tactics to try to steal this election.

We have uncovered a mountain of evidence, which will come to light piece by piece over the next week, about the diabolical NDC plot to cheat, rig, and steal this election.

Let me close by emphasizing once again Nana Addo?s commitment to peace in this election. Yesterday?s violent provocations by the NDC underscore the point made by our flag bearer since the beginning of this campaign and reiterated in Kumasi during the peace rally earlier this week. He has consistently told his supporters that the election must be carried out in peace, and that no NPP member should cast the first stone.

Unfortunately, it is President John Mahama and the NDC whose record of violence during by-elections demonstrates their non-commitment to free, fair and peaceful voting. The stock in trade of the NDC is to pretend peace whilst promoting violence. So far, His Excellency President Mahama has offered only rhetoric but demonstrated no action against the violence in his own party in support of peace. Silence is approval, and he must be held accountable for the violent thuggish provocations in Ash Town yesterday.

To the people of Ghana who will go out and vote next Friday, be assured that the few people who conspire and seek to overturn your true mandate will fail. They are very few and we, the peace loving people of Ghana are many. We will be resilient because we know we can do so much more as a nation. Please go out and vote. The winds of change are driving you forward. Do not be intimidated by the NDC thugs.

Stand tall in your communities and protect your right to vote.

Thank you.
