A NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL, who is part of a young group that has been terrorizing the people of Kumasi, was shot dead on Saturday after a fierce gun battle between a joint police/military patrol team and the suspected criminals.

The deceased, Kwaku Asante, 24, was shot dead in Hollywood style during an exchange of fire which ensued when the security agents stormed Sepe Timpom around 8:00pm that day to foil a robbery attempt in the area.

Three other hoodlums, namely Kwadwo Isaac, 34, Amoah Nicholas, 20 and Peter Rai, 20, who were part of the rampaging gangsters that were armed-to-the-teeth, had been apprehended by the police.

Scores of other suspected criminals that were part of the robbery group however managed to escape with their locally manufactured pistols, sharp machetes and other weapons.

The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the morgue of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi awaiting autopsy.

The police had also mounted a search for the other suspects.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Corporal Godwin Ahianyo, Deputy PRO of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, said for the past week, the police had been receiving distress calls about the activities of some young hoodlums, who were terrorizing the people of some areas in the city.

He mentioned the communities that had been the target of the gangsters, whose age ranged from 20 to 35, as Aboabo Number One and Two, Sawaba and Sepe Timpom.

Corporal Ahianyo noted that the gangsters? modus operandi was riding unregistered motorbikes at top speed amid firing of gunshots to scare the people away after robbing them.

Having been notified about the presence of the hoodlums at the above-mentioned areas, he said, the police tasked the joint police/military patrol team to comb those areas to arrest the suspects.

He said three days ago, the police was hinted about the presence of the hoodlums at Aboabo Number One, so the joint patrol team stormed the area only to meet the absence of the gangsters.

Corporal Ahianyo said on Saturday around 7:30pm, the police received a distress call that these same criminals, wearing hoods and masks to hide their identities, had stormed the Sawaba area, operating freely and firing gunshots.

The police rushed to Sawaba but on arrival they were told the gangsters had moved to Sepe Timpom to continue their robbery spree. The police then followed them there.

Upon arrival, the gangsters met the law enforcement agents with gunshots so the joint police/military team was left with no option but to fire back, which resulted in the death of Kwaku Asante.

Items such as machetes were found on the deceased criminal who died instantly after being hit by a bullet.

Three of the gangsters were then picked up by the police, but unfortunately, most of the group members whose identities were not known as of now, managed to escape with locally manufactured pistols and other deadly weapons.

Corporal Ahianyo gave the assurance that the police would do everything within their power to arrest the runaway robbers, urging the general public to feed the police with vital information to ensure the arrest of the suspects.
