The Norwegian parliament on Tuesday approved introducing military conscription for women, a move Defence Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide labelled as historic.

Women have in recent years been able to volunteer.

The change will allow the defence forces to “recruit the best and most motivated personnel,” the minister said.

An earlier law said all men aged 19 to 44 were obliged to undertake military service for up to 19 months. The first tour of duty comprises 12 months.

There are provisions for conscientious objectors.
