Police in the southern Indian city of Kochi Wednesday said they would not allow couples to kiss in public to protest against alleged harassment by Hindu activists.

INDIAN POLICEThe ‘kiss of love’ protest was organized after a Hindu group vandalized a coffee shop in the city of Kozhikode, which they said was used by students to date.

Organizers said people would gather at the Marine Drive in Kochi on Sunday to “express the freedom of love” and “protest against moral policing”.

Kissing and public displays of affection are generally taboo in India.

“We have not received any request to hold such a protest, but I have told these people that they cannot hold kissing sessions in a public place and create law and order problems,” city police commissioner KG James said by telephone.

Hindu and Muslim groups have also opposed the protest, saying kissing in public was indecent and against Indian culture.

Organizer Rahul Pasupalan told reporters that no permissions were needed for an informal event and he expected some 250 couples to gather with placards on Sunday.

A Facebook page launched a few days ago has received nearly 21,600 likes, and local artists and writers have also backed the protest.
