A 19 year-old unemployed, Yaw Nkansah, who raped a 23-year-old woman in a cocoa farm at Akotom on the Tarkwa-Bogoso road, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Tarkwa Circuit Court.

Nkansah was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Edward Paddy, said in early May this year, the complainant who lives in Koforidua, visited her family at Nyamenae cottage near Akotom.

He said on May 11, the complainant fell sick and went to Akotom for treatment, whilst there the convict spotted her as being a stranger so he hatched a plan to rape her.

Inspector Paddy said the convict under the pretext of going to his farm to uproot cassava, invited his friends, Kwasi Awuah and Kwame Attah, both 16 years to accompany him.

On the way, Yaw disclosed his intention to his friends and threatened to slash them into pieces with a cutlass if they refused to accompany him to carry out his plan.

For the fear of losing their lives the convict?s friends complied with his order.

According to the Prosecution, on reaching a cocoa farm, the accused person spotted the complainant returning home, attacked her and raped her, while his friends stood helpless watching him in the act.

He said after the act Nkansah stole 10 Ghana cedis belonging to Gladys and took to his heels, but while going, one Mr. Isaac Tetteh, who was then in his farm, saw him but he did not ask him any question.

Inspector Paddy said the complainant reported the incident to his family who immediately organised a search party to arrest the accused person.

A report was made to the Police on that same day and the convict was arrested at Tarkwa, while attempting to escape GNA
