TEMA REGIONAL Police Highways Patrol team has intercepted 36 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on a Nigeria-bound bus.

The parcels of herbs was said to have been concealed in a false compartment under an Iveco bus with Nigerian registration number LSD 710 XA, driven by a certain Christian Chikelue, a 42-year-old Nigerian, when intercepted at the Tema Steel Works junction, on the Kpone-Aflao highway.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, Tema regional police commander, briefing a section of the media, mentioned that the police acted upon a tip-off that a Nigeria-bound passenger bus was carrying some substance suspected to be drugs.

According to him, the police, armed with the information, dispatched personnel for thorough inspection of vehicles plying the highway.

?When the Police caught up with the vehicle that refused to stop immediately at the Tema steel works junction where the driver was signalled to stop and park off the road, an immediate search was conducted on the car which revealed one parcel of the substance, and the driver was ordered to drive the car to the Regional Headquarters for thorough search.? DCOP Atingane explained.

The regional commander continued that further search conducted on the vehicle revealed additional 35 parcels concealed in a false compartment built purposely for the concealment of contraband goods under the vehicle.

The driver of the Nigeria-bound bus he reported admitted that a man contracted him to transport the substance to Nigeria for a fee of GH?500 equivalent to ?50,000 (Naira) during police interrogation.

?The driver further alleged that a man had earlier contracted him once, with same substance to Nigeria, saying that those substances were herbal medicine,? DCOP Atingane mentioned.

DCOP Atingane noted his command was doing everything possible to fight what he described as the drug war, especially ?wee,? which he said the youth  were currently dealing in within the metropolis.

The Tema Regional Police Command assured the general public that the command would work around the clock to apprehend all miscreants making life uncomfortable for the good people of Tema and its environs.

He further warned that any miscreant, when arrested, would be made to face the full rigors of the laws, promising the residents of maximum safety and security to enable them go about their businesses serenely without fear.

He, however, noted that nothing incriminating was found on the passengers on board the arrested vehicle, as they were transferred into another vehicle to continue their journey to Nigeria.
