NNS ANDONI, constructed by Nigerian Navy engineers, will be commissioned by Jonathan on Friday

President Goodluck Jonathan will, on Friday, commission the country’s first locally made warship, NNS ANDONI, which was constructed by the Nigerian Navy engineers.

The ceremony is slated to hold at the Nigerian Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Vice Admiral G. Adekeye and Rear Admiral G. Jonah, who were the former Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Naval Engineering respectively, conceived the 31-metre Nigerian Navy Seaward Defence Boat (SDB) as a research and developmental project.

The vessel was built in resemblance to River Town Class Patrol Craft in the Nigerian Navy, including NNS YOLA and NNS BRASS, as decided by the designers.

The design for the SDB was unveiled in December 2007; however, construction work commenced in January 2008.

The structural frames and shell plating of the hull and superstructure were completed between January 2008 and April 2009.

The project was initially suspended due to lack of funds, until the incumbent Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral O. Ibrahim released funds for its completion.

The vessel, which was successfully completed in spite of challenges, is expected to facilitate future research and development in the Nigerian Navy, with regard to national transformation.
