Nigeria Promotes African Culture

The Initiator of the Nigerian Music Video Awards (NMVA), Cally Ikpe, on Friday said that the awards would continue to recognise Africa?s cultural and moral values.

Ikpe, a broadcaster said in Lagos that the NMVA would continue to choose music videos that reflected the values.

“The NMVA supports creativity, but it must be responsible creativity. It must take the society into consideration.

“The contemporary music culture tends to draw attention to itself by all means possible, and sometimes, in doing this, it steps overboard,?? he said.

Ikpe said that the NMVA disregarded offensive videos and would not consider them for the awards.

“When we set out in 2007, we were very conscious of the standards which should be clean videos and lyrics, and we have continued to preach same since then.

“On a one-on-one basis, we have been able to talk to artistes. It seems a lot of them are beginning to listen because there are noticeable changes,?? he said.

The broadcaster said that lack of funds was a major challenge to the awards.

“The Lagos State Government, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Lipton Tea, Eko Hotel, Guinness and a few others have supported us in the past.

“This year, Lagos State is, once again, on board, and we are talking with few other sponsors.

“The objective of the award is not to make money. It is to raise the bar to enhance standards in music video production,?? Ikpe said.
