A drinking water supply system inaugurated on Friday in Mahanoro, a town located 360 kilometers east of Madagascar’s capital, will enable nearly 2,000 people to have clean water.
The water system was sponsored by Britain through its program called “Accelerating Sanitation and Water for All” (ASWA) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) through its WASH program, says a joint statement from the Ministry of Water, UNICEF and the British Embassy.
The water system was important in the fact that only three out of ten people drink clean water in rural area in Madagascar, said Madagascar’s Minister of Water Johanita Ndahimananjara.
Madagascar is ranked the forth country in the world to have the lowest rate in access to drinking water, data from the Ministry of Water said.
Only 14 percent of the 22 million people in Madagascar have improved sanitation and nearly half of the population living in rural areas still practice open-air defecation. Enditem
