New charges against Egypt’s Morsi-Report

Egypt’s prosecutors plan to file new charges against deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, this time over accusations that he leaked documents related to national security affairs to Qatar while he was in office, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reported on Thursday.wpid-morsi.jpg

Chief prosecutor Hesham Barakat ordered that Morsi be jailed for 15 days pending further investigations for allegedly granting Qatari news broadcaster Al Jazeera access to the secret documents.

Formal charges are to be submitted once the investigation has been completed.

Qatar is a key ally of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which was designated as a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in December.

Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, was toppled by the army last year after massive protests against his rule.

He is in prison and is being tried in three other cases on charges related to inciting the deadly violence against protesters, conspiring with foreign organizations and involvement in a mass prison escape during a 2011 revolt that forced his predecessor, Hosny Mubarak, out of power.

Morsi has repeatedly dismissed the charges as politically motivated, insisting he is still the legitimate president of the country.
