NDC MP Kills Polling Station Agent

THE NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo, Raymond Tawiah is currently in trouble with the family of a man he allegedly knocked over and killed with his vehicle.

The deceased person’s family is demanding GH¢8,000 to enable them perform funeral and burial rites for their departed relative. 

The deceased only known as Jiga, an NDC polling station chairman in the area, was reportedly knocked down by the MP around Trom, a Somanya suburb a couple of weeks ago and is said to have passed away at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital at Koforidua on April 2 after being on admission for a few days.

Details about the exact date the accident occurred however remains confusing as the dates given to by the MP and a police source conflict each other.

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the MP, he confirmed the accident saying it occurred on March 28 while he driving to Parliament from his house. He said the crash occurred when he tried to overtake the victim, who was on a motorbike heading in the same direction. Mr. Tawiah however alleged it was the rider who crashed into his vehicle. 

The MP was alleged to have deposited GH¢1,500 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital meant to cater for the victim’s treatment before he died. 

Mr. Tawiah says he reported the incident to police but cannot recollect when he made the report.

He is currently assisting Somanya police with its investigation into the accident after being granted a police enquiry bail.

A police source at Somanya however alleged the accident occurred on March 12 and not March 28 adding the MP reported the incident on March 28, sixteen days after the accident.  

“He will be helping everybody and of course himself if he told the truth rather than trying to deceive everybody into thinking the accident happened on the date he mentioned,” the source remarked.

DSP Douglas Kumah, the Akuse District Police Commander  confirmed the accident but said he could not provide further details as he was out of the office at that moment. 

“I cannot tell you off hand when the MP’s accident occurred and when it was reported to the police. I can only do this if I were in the office with the docket in front of me,” he said
