The leadership of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have concluded the much-anticipated merger of the two parties which was announced sometime in June last year.

The founder and chairman of the DFP, Dr. Obed Asamoah told Citi News their decision to go back to the NDC has been after a long deliberation with its executives, adding that they had talks with some leading members of the NDC on the same subject.

Dr. Asamoah, who is at the NDC party headquarters told Citi News “I have had discussions with Professor Mills, we have met and agreed to let bygones be bygones and learn to create a machinery for discussions between the two parties that would enable the two parties to work together in the future”.

“You cannot keep on nursing your grievance for life and so if somebody comes and says let bygones be bygones, let us forget the past, and let us try to work together in the future, I think it is natural that one should consider such a situation seriously.”

The Vice President John Dramani Mahama is also at the NDC headquarters to represent government at the final signing ceremony.
Dr. Asamoah, one-time National Chairman of the NDC, Bede Zieden former General Secretary of the NDC and Frances Assiam, a former Women’s Organiser of the NDC, all broke away from the party after the Sunyani Congress in 2006.

They formed the DFP after the breakaway and have since decided to join the NDC fold. Frances Assiam, however, broke away from the DFP and is now the parliamentary aspirant for the Adenta Constituency on the ticket of the biggest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Also at the NDC headquarters is Nii Okaija Adamafio, a former Minister of Interior. Hundreds of NDC supporters have gathered at the headquarters to witness the reunion ceremony.
