NATO could play a role in coordinating military action against the Islamic State militant group, according to its outgoing secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

“At this stage I won’t exclude anything,” Rasmussen tells a think tank event in Brussels, referring to the Islamic State as “a group of terrorists with whom there is no chance whatsoever to find any political solution.”

Rasmussen, whose mandate ends this month, says there has been no request yet for NATO to provide command and control capabilities, but points to the precedent set by its operation in Libya.
