There was? grieving throughout? the country as the nation marked the one-week? from the death of? President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital.

The whole country went quiet for a minute at exactly 2.15pm.

In almost all regional capitals church services were organised to remember President Mills and pray for his soul.

Most people were clad in red and black while others tied red bands to their vehicles to signify their mood.

There was a solemn special church service at the Castle gardens, which was attended by the President John Dramani Mahama and his wife Lordina; former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu; past and present government officials, municipal chief executives, traditional chiefs, security chiefs and people? from all walks of life.

The mood was extra-solemn, and this was no different at the Efua Sutherland Children?s Park in Accra where the new President Mahama addressed a large gathering there.

He said while he was alive and in office, the late President Mills was vilified and very much criticised and insulted, adding: ?now that he is dead, we have realised and appreciated his vision for Ghana, and his virtues are being celebrated. He is now looking at us from heaven.?

President Mahama took the opportunity to appeal to Ghanaians to ensure that the peace and stability currently prevailing in the country is maintained, as the whole world has turned its attention to Ghana.

He said the smooth transition following the demise of the late President Mills has endeared Ghana to the whole world, and has also further reinforced Ghana?s democratic credentials.

The President noted that as the successor of Prof. Mills, he needs the support of all to rule the nation well: ?I need the support of all to build this country.?

?I was born in 1958, which mean l was born in the nation Ghana after we gained independence — so that makes me the youngest President after that period.? This marks the new era for the younger generation.

?The mantle of power has been shifted to the new generation. We, the younger generation, must realise that this is our time. You must stand by me and show our fathers that we are ready to take up this responsibility and not disappoint them.?
