Nana Kofi Oppong-Damoah: NDC has zero record for accountability and transparency

The Mills administration cannot claim to have a solid track record in the area of accountability. That is according to a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s communication team.

According to the NPP communication team member, Nana Kofi Oppong-Damoah, the current administration has always resorted to cosmetic dressing and propaganda when dealing with issues of national interest.

Speaking on Minority Caucus, a political talk show on Multi TV’s Joy News channel, Mr. Oppong-Damoah recounted some promises made by President Mills when he assumed office but has failed to deliver on them.

“President Mills in his State of the Nation address in 2009 told the whole of Ghana that he’s going to address accountability and transparency using 3 major initiatives” Nana Kofi noted.

“The first one was the Right to Information bill that has not been passed. The second one was the Ghana Broadcasting law that has also not been passed. The third one was the propagation of a code of ethics, we are yet to see that as well. So in terms of accountability, the track record of this government is zero. They have not done anything” he argued.

He played down claims of accountability stated in the green book published by the government.

“When you look at their green book 2, they say they are accountable because they have presented the Right to Information bill to parliament” but according to him “that was done because of an IMF conditionality.”

“The IMF conditionality said the Right to Information bill must go to parliament, it didn’t say parliament must pass it. That is how come the bill has being before parliament and it has not been passed. They only took it there so they could get funding from IMF and now that the funding is coming, end of matter” he stated.

He argued that until the IMF comes up with another conditionality calling for the passage of the Right to Information bill for instance, “the bill will remain a bill, it will never become an act. That feeds into the psyche of the government that they do things for window dressing.”
