Plans to introduce a mineral beneficiation strategy in Namibia are at an advanced stage, an official with the Namibia Chamber of Mines has said.

Proposed in 2011 after the finance ministry had announced plans to introduce a five percent levy as incentive for mineral value addition, the chamber of mines suggested the beneficiation strategy as a roadmap for industrialising Namibia ahead of 2030.
To help smoothen the implementation of the strategy, the chamber of mines also suggested the creation of a Joint Value Addition Committee under the mines and energy ministry.
The committee was constituted in 2013 and in August last year it presented a report, which showed that there were possibilities of downstream value addition in the diamond, iron and zinc sectors.
Veston Malango, the chamber of mines Chief Executive Officer, said Thursday in Windhoek that there were strong hopes that the strategy would be finalised by end of the year.
Addressing the media when he announced plans for this year’s mines expo, Malango said part of the beneficiation strategy is to help Namibia diversify the economy since the country’s mineral resources hold numerous opportunities. Enditem
