NAGRAT Replies Nunoo Mensah Over Their Strike

President of National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Christian Addae-Poku says the call for the suspension of salaries of striking employees and the description of the many strikes on the labour front as a sign of high level indiscipline in the country by the National Security Advisor, Brigadier Nunoo Mensah (rtd) as unfortunate and pathetic.

The former Military officer, during the commissioning of a nine-classroom block he built for O?Reilly Senior High School in Accra, said; ?As I walk in the sun here from morning till evening sometime I only drink orange juice to build a school for the future of our children. Then some teachers say that they won?t teach them because they are on strike!. It is very sad that we toil with the future of our children,? he bemoaned.

??every Tom, Dick and Harry gets up and is calling for a strike. If you don?t want the job, Ghana is not a police state, take your passport and get out of this country??.If you can?t sacrifice like what some of us have don?t then get out. If the kitchen is too hot for you, get out?, he opined.

Addressing the comments by Brig Nunoo-Mensah on Hot Fm, Christian Addae-Poku wondered if the National Security Advisor could have helped put up the school if he had been treated unfairly when he was actively working. He stressed that if Nunoo-Mensah and government wants the labour unions not to embark on any industrial action, then those tasked with the job of seeing to their welfare do a good job of it.

?It is not only the military which is disciplined and if he has not received all his salaries ever since he was actively working, he would not have been able to put up the nine-school block??.it is rather unfortunate that people blame workers who go on strike and not those whose bad attitude has led to workers going on strike,? he expressed.

??the days of revolution where culture of silence was the order of the day are over and so in this country, we have freedom to embark on actions which do not violate the laws of the land?Ghana is our country and so if something is going amiss, we have every right to address the issue within the law??workers have been sacrificing in many ways and for a long time our rights have been trampled upon but sometimes in the interest of the state, we back down on many issues,? he added.
