A group of mobs in Mozambique on Friday blocked a border post with South Africa – a “retaliation” they said for the ongoing xenophobia violence in South Africa.
The mobs stopped South African cars near the border post in the town of Ressano Garcia, causing a traffic jam, and some passengers were physically assaulted.
Police fired several shots into the air to disperse the mobs while the latter threw stones in response. One man, reportedly to be the leader of the group, was arrested.
Angered by the recent spate of anti-foreigner violence where Mozambicans in South Africa were affected, some companies in Mozambique’s Inhambane and Tete provinces have “expelled” their South African workers.
