He expressed concern about the alarming rate at which the nation was losing its forest cover and said that could not be allowed to continue.
Ghana reportedly loses an average of 125,400 hectares or 1.6 per cent of its forest every year, thus posing a serious threat to wildlife.
Nii Osa Mills, said this should not only become a source of worry to everybody but galvanize all stakeholders to take decisive action.
These were contained in an address read for him at the inauguration of an 11-member committee to regulate human activities in the Bosomtwe Lake Basin at Ankaase in the Bosome-Freho District.
The formation of the committee, spearheaded by the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, comes amid depletion of the fish stock and pollution of the natural lake, the source of livelihood of many families.
Named: ?Otade Bosomtwe ho Banbo Community Resource Management Area (CREMA)?, it would check disastrous practices to the preservation of the lake and its resources.
The event was chaired by the assembly member of Beposo, Mr. Noble Afrifa Yamoah.
Nii Osa Mills welcomed the idea of the CREMA and thanked the Spanish Government and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)?s World Network of Biosphere Reserve for funding and technical support for the project.
Mr. Kwame Adarkwa, the District Chief Executive (DCE), pledged to give to the committee all the needed assistance to carry out its mandate.
The district assembly has already planted trees, including coconut, along the lake and enacted by-laws to protect the lake.
Mr. Ebenezer Appiah-Sampong, acting Director (Technical), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urged the committee to collaborate with the chiefs and the other stakeholders to limit human activities destroying the lake and its resources.
Mrs. Abena Dufie Wiredu, Pra Basin Officer of the Water Resources Commission, asked the Bosomtwe and Bosome Freho District Assemblies to take collective responsibility for the sustainable management of the lake.
She labeled it as ?a priceless gift to the nation that needed to be taken good care of.?
