At least six people were killed in two separate attacks in Pakistan targeting police, officials said Friday, as the military pursued its campaign against Islamist militants in mountains near the Afghan border.wpid-Afghan-attack-pti.jpg

A group of armed militants overran a security checkpost in south-western Balochistan province shortly before midnight on Thursday, killing four police officers, provincial Home Minister Sarfraz Bugti said.

Hours later a bus carrying police officers to a training academy in southern Karachi city was hit by a bomb planted on a motorbike parked on the roadside, killing two passers-by, police official Rao Anwar said.

At least 12 men including police officers were injured in the bombing, said doctor Seemi Jamali at Jinnah Hospital, where they were being treated.

The latest attacks occurred as the military fought fierce battles with Islamist militants linked with al-Qaeda in the Tirah Valley area of Khyber tribal district near the Afghan border.

Over 100 rebels have been killed in two weeks of airstrikes and a ground offensive, the military said, while the army suffered more than a dozen casualties.

The Tirah Valley is one of several transit points used by Islamist militants to get across the porous border.
