Mercy Tagoe Backs Referee Boycott Following Attacks

FIFA referee Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoe  has backed the idea of boycotting local competitions following severe attacks on match officials.

The weekend’s league games were marred with several reports of severe beating of match officials by irate fans with Kumasi-based Kojo Kyeremanteng the worse off.

The Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) have since threatened not to officiate any local game if authorities fail to act decisively.

And the former Ghana Best Referee awardee who has had to deal with almost similar aggression from fans in the past agrees with the position.

“I completely agree with the stance taken by RAG,” she told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“It is certainly wrong to physically assault referees because a decision doesn’t go your way.

“I believe it is time a critical look is taken on this issue else referee will keep getting less and less motivated to officiate in this country.”

Tagoe also shares in the suggestion of seriously pursing perpetrators for criminal productions rather than just punish guilty clubs.

“The situation has definitely gone beyond just banning clubs and venues,” she adds.

“Persons found to be involved is such despicable acts should be put before the courts because physical assault in itself is not tolerated by law.”
