The Meaning Of Islam

1

wpid-islam.jpgIslam means peace and submission to the will of Allah.? Believers do engage in regular prayers, supplications, payment of ?zakat?, fasting and perform hajj pilgrimage.? Muslims being at peace with God they ?are therefore believed ?to be imbued with neighborliness and fellow feeling. However owing to terrorist activities of? so called Muslim? groupings like al-kaida ?boko haram? and Taliban in some parts of the world including West Africa ,? there has always been the fear that???? terrorism?? could rear its ugly head in ???Ghana where? Muslims have been? living peacefully with Christians and others? in communities?, work places, schools, military and police barracks. Many dignitaries including religious leaders such as Imams are happy that Ghana is relatively peaceful.? They are therefore pleading with Muslims in Ghana not to take part in terrorist activities.? One such dignitary is Imam Ibrahim Toure of Ashongman Estates in Accra who made a powerful plea to Muslims during the eid ul fitr prayers to mark the end of the Ramadan fast. In a sermon to the congregation, he said all true Muslims must come out to oppose those who want to turn Islam into a faith that is against the world.? He declared that good Muslims are part of the peaceful world, part of humanity and are for peace. He added that Muslims are for peaceful coexistence with all and are for mutual respect and tolerance.

The Imam said mankind was created by God to live together in peace and quoted the following from the Quran to buttress his point thus: ?oh mankind we created you from a single pair of a male and female, made you into nations and tribes, so that you might come to know one another. The noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is the most conscious of him. Truly God is all knowing all aware? Quran (49:13)

However the Imam said ??we live in difficult times described by the prophet Mohamed (pbh) as the period of ?fitna? with crisis coming one after the other, crisis that will shake our faith and test our patience.

?In these difficult times, the Imam said, Muslims need to keep??? alive the spirit and lessons of self restraint patience, forbearance and compassion learnt during the Ramadan fast.

He advised the peace loving Muslims to keep up their faith by being good Muslims at all times quoting the Quran that says that ?oh you who have attained to faith be ever steadfast in your devotion to God, bearing witness to the truth in all equity; and never let hatred of anyone lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Be just: this is closely to being God conscious. And remain conscious of God. Verily God is aware of all that you do? Quran (5:8)

To those who resort to terrorism such as suicide bombers, killing themselves and innocent people the Imam had this to say. ?Your cause is wrong as you are only attempting to highjack the peaceful religion of Prophet Mohammed and all the Prophets before him?

Hereminded the congregation that Ramadan is meant to celebration of the revelation of the quran ,the most beautiful of gift of allah almighty.

In the face of the challenges facing us he said that we ought to use the wepon of quran to turn the tables on those who wish to spread hatred and dislike against islam. We aught to show them the true face of Islam; that the Quran teaches peace through justice and compassion; that the Quran is opposed to aggressive wars; that the Quran? calls for saving lives; it teaches us to save the earth, protect? the? environment and act as good shepherds
