There appears to be a mad rush for the newly formed National Democratic Party (NDP) as three former parliamentary aspirants of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) resigned to join the new party.

They are one of the aspirants for the Weija constituency, Mohammed Frimpong, and a former aspirant for Yilo Krobo, Daniel-Gerald Tettey-Akomey and that of Chiana-Paga in 2008, Rudolf Amenga-Etego.

At a forum at the Legon Botanical Gardens over the weekend, the spokesman for the three defectors, Mohammed Frimpong, said, ?We really find it very difficult based on our vision of grassroots focus in the philosophy of social democracy to really continue in this pursuit to serve our nation in what is left of the NDC without the founder.?

?This is why we are quickly renouncing our membership in this resignation from the NDC to make sure that at least we put all our full weight behind the activities, growth and success of the National Democratic Party.

?It is the attitude and policy of the current government that tells us that they have shifted from social democracy; you can see clearly that they have not responded to the grassroots and they even derogatorily refer to them as foot-soldiers and that there is no notion of foot-soldiers in the NDC and that there is no special place for foot-soldiers when we all know that they have been ordinary people who have carried this vision on their backs over the years,? he indicated.

?For the past three years rather, unfortunately, based on the seeming conflict and bickering in the NDC between the NDC and the founder, it is now clear that the values on which the NDC was founded have completely been eroded,? he noted.

That notwithstanding, the defected NDC parliamentary aspirants said, ?whether we like it or not, the founder personifies these values and that is why we can say that his leadership shelf-life is everlasting. Up to this point, his charm and charisma continue to gladden the hearts of Ghanaians.

?The so-called conflict that arose between the leadership and Mr. Rawlings is actually just epitomizing, for us, the eagerness with which the current leadership (of the NDC) want to distance themselves from the symbols; be they colours, be they personalities, be they philosophies that constitute social democratic principles,? they said.

For this reason, the group said, ?We think that there is need for a rescue and we see the NDP as that rescue factor within our movement?when we heard of the formation of the NDP with the blessing of the former First family, we really saw some seriousness at least defining a new path for the fulfillment of our leadership roles of this country.?

Furthermore, they said, ?We do not want to waver and hesitate at all in making sure that we bring our capacity; intellectual and spiritual to make sure that at least the new formation of the National Democratic Party becomes a reality.?

Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected the black, red, white and green colours presented for registration by the yet-to-be certified NDP because it violates the Political Parties Act 574.

The founding members of the party are said to have been asked to work on its colours which are similar to that of the ruling NDC?s to conform with section 10 of the Act, which states that ??No prospective political party shall submit to the Commission for the purpose of registration under this Act any identifying symbol, slogan, colour or name which is the same as the symbol, slogan, colour or name of any other registered political party; or of the Republic; or which so closely resembles the symbol, slogan, colour or name of a registered political party or the Republic as to be likely to deceive or confuse members of the public.?
