Lufthansa said Wednesday strikes launched by its pilots over the last two weeks would cost the German airline about 60 million euros (77.6 million dollars).

The Cologne-based carrier was forced to cancel about 140 flights on Wednesday as a result of an eight-hour strike by pilots targeting Munich airport in support of their campaign against the airline’s planned new early retirement scheme.

This is the third time in the last two weeks that the pilots have walked off the job.

The pilots staged a three-day strike in April in pursuit of their demands for better retirement benefits, which also cost the airline 60 million euros.

The pilots walked off the job at Munich airport at 10 am (0800 GMT), their union Vereinigung Cockpit said on Wednesday.

“It cannot be that unions can paralyze the whole company,” said Thomas Kluehr, a Lufthansa official at Munich airport.

Industrial action by the pilots last week resulted in the airline being forced to cancel 218 flights from Frankfurt airport.

A week earlier, a strike by pilots employed by Lufthansa’s budget offshoot Germanwings led to the cancellation of 116 domestic flights.

The about 5,400 pilots employed at Lufthansa, Germanwings and Lufthansa Cargo want the company to maintain its current retirement benefits system, under which they can retire at 55 and continue to receive part of their wages. Lufthansa wants to scrap the plan.
