Tongo (U/E), Dec. 2, GNA – With barely some few days left to go for the election, the Local Council of Churches (LCC) in the Talensi and Nabdam districts in the Upper East Region, with support from World Vision Ghana, have intensified its advocacy programmes on the need for peaceful elections.

Activities embarked on in the area include bringing together the leadership of all the various political parties and religious sects to Tongo where a film show on the devastating nature of conflicts in countries such as Kenya and Nigeria were shown to them.

Additionally the LCC is taking the film shows to all the communities including Sheiga, Kajetia, Tongo and Pwalugu.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the Kajetia Community, Mr Emmanuel Anoeni, Secretary of the LCC, said the peace activities was to broker peace within the political and religious sects and to ensure peaceful elections.

He said apart from the film shows, peace talks are also being organised through which the people were advised not to allow themselves to be swayed by any politician or religious leader to foment trouble in the forthcoming election.

He said both the political and religious leaders, after the peace activities, pledged their commitment to ensuring peace in the upcoming elections, adding that they were amazed at the devastating nature of conflicts in the films and indicated that they ?we will not and never allow such a thing to happen in Ghana.?

Mr Anoeni said the six days event would be climaxed by a peace talk and march involving the various youth groups.

Mr Norbert Baba Akolbila, Area Development Manager of Programme, World Vision Ghana, said peace is a cardinal principle when it comes to development.

He said without it no development could thrive and reiterated the need for the people to cherish it and not to do anything that would mar the peace the country is currently enjoying.
