“I thanked the prime minister for the generosity his government and the people of Lebanon showed during the past four years by hosting the Syrian refugees,” Amos said as the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator after a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
“We discussed the importance of the third donors conference to be held in Kuwait as for gathering more funds and meeting the previous engagements which aim to help the Syrian refugees in Lebanon and the surrounding countries, and to support the economic stability of Lebanon and Jordan,” Amos discribed the meeting.
Amos also visited the Minister of Social Affairs, Rashid Derbas, with whom she discussed an array of humanitarian affairs, especially those related to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Rashid Derbas told reporters that the discussion touched on the economic and social setbacks Lebanon is enduring.
He also conveyed the confirmation from Valerie Amos that the UN would not cease its aids to Lebanon and the refugees in the country.
“We agreed that the humanitarian condition we are witnessing was the result of a continuous political issue to which the big states and the international community cannot find a solution,” Derbas said.
“Ending the war is the best means to end this tragic humanitarian condition,” he stressed.
According to the UN Higher Commission for Refugees, Lebanon hosts more than 1.2 million Syrian refugees and is enduring hard time to satisfy their basic needs.
Since the beginning of 2015, the Lebanese authorities has started to apply strict measures to control the influx of refugees from Syria. Enditem
