Officials of the Kumasi branch of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) are seeking to reinforce the city?s position as the second-largest industrial hub in the country, through the Ghana Industry and Technology Fair (INDUTECH 2013).

The Garden City will be hosting the second in recent years of the once-celebrated fair from March 27 to April 1, on the theme ?Improving Market Share of Made in Ghana Goods: The Challenges of Access to Market?.

?Last year, we sat down as a regional body of AGI and asked ourselves several questions. Kumasi is the second industrial hub of this country, what do we do to maintain this position? If we do not take steps to market products made in Ghana, especially from Kumasi and beyond, we might be losing our number-two position to the oil city,? said William Awuku Ahiadormey, Chairman of the Planning Committee of the fair.

?Kumasi is the only city in Ghana that seems to be in the middle section of the cocoa- growing areas, and you can reach that city within eight hours from any corner of the country — which means that it takes a shorter time to move from Tumu to Kumasi than travelling from Tumu to Accra to trade. It also takes the same travelling time from our neighbouring countries like C?te Divoire, Togo and Burkina Faso. From the border towns you can get to Kumasi within eight hours.?

The fair is intended to bring local manufacturers, distributors and buyers together and give the opportunity to businesses in other West African countries to come and network with their Ghanaian counterparts.

There will be two seminars during the fair, which will discuss the quality of made-in-Ghana goods compared to goods from other countries as well as the challenges of agro-business development in Ghana.

?We want to create a platform for dialogue and discussions around industrial development of the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo areas, and give exhibitors and visitors the opportunity to do brisk business. We want to give Ghanaian industrialists and service providers the opportunity to showcase what they have and then open up to the international community to also participate,? Mr. Ahiadormey said.

About 10 businesses from Nigeria, C?te D?Ivoire and Burkina Faso have already registered to be part of the fair, with more expected to come onboard.
