komla dumor

When Komla Dumor opted for a career in broadcasting he was unknowingly succumbing to the dictate of destiny.

Even the movement from Nigeria, where he was schooling earlier back home, was predestined. It was like yesterday when he embarked upon the career of his choice?broadcasting?when private broadcasting was relatively in its infantile stage in Ghana.

Rising meteorically he soon etched a name for himself and ultimately won the topmost prize for excellent journalism. It is like yesterday when some kicked against the prize going to him.

His eventual engagement by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was doubtlessly a dream come true, an icing on the cake for a man whose love for journalism was akin to a calling, a passion.

Rising to the level of a lead presenter on the Africa segment of the BBC?s TV was evidence about Komla?s prowess behind the microphone, an unquestionable talent.

Komla?s performance and fame sweeping across the world like wildfire during the harmattan continued fervently until its stoppage last Saturday by death.

Some human beings appear to be in a hurry on the ephemeral earth seemingly performing duties bestowed upon them by the unseen hands of the Creator so they can finish these and return to where they ultimately belong.

That appeared to be the story of Komla Dumor. At the age of 41, he was able to accomplish his assignment on earth leaving behind footprints which constitute the subject of eulogies for him as we mourn him.

As a role model many youth who have chosen a career in journalism pray to reach the heights he attained, as they continuously followed him on tweeter.

The candles have gone off and their association with him discontinued by death. Now the day is over for Komla Dumor and that voice is gone forever. Night has drawn nigh and the shadows across the evening say it all. He belongs to the world of our ancestors having nothing to do with us anymore.

He would no longer say ?I am Komla Dumor reporting for the BBC from Johannesburg, South Africa.?

When he was on assignment during the death of Madiba, little did he know that his days were limited on earth and that like the man whose funeral and mourning he was covering, he too, would soon follow suit and break the hearts of his compatriots.

The spiritual dimension of man is something about which we know next to nothing and that is how God wants it to be. That is why death would always lay its icy hands on man when he least expects.

As we mourn this man who has been described in motley terms?Ghana?s Gift To The World, Ghana?s Envoy In The International Community?let us not forget that as mortals what befell him can happen to us too.

What to do therefore is to be righteous and shun hubris by reason of our wealth or the temporary political positions bestowed upon us.

Komla Dumor Rest In Peace.
