FLASHBACK: Johnson Kombian

Johnson Kombian, the notorious armed robber and serial jail-breaker, currently jailed at Ankaful Maximum Prisons for breaking jail, was yesterday put before an Accra Magistrate Court in connection with the murder of two policemen at Nakpanduri in the Northern Region.

The accused was put before an Accra Metropolitan Assembly Court presided over by Ali Baba Abature where he was to be charged with murder for him to be remanded.

However, the case had to be adjourned as the accused person, 35, said he was not fluent in any language except his mother tongue, the Bimoba language of the Mamprusi West District of Northern Region. The court said: “We do not have a Bimoba interpreter.”

It had earlier asked the audience whether anyone could assist the court but no one responded and so the hearing was subsequently adjourned.

When the court asked him where his lawyer was, Kombian, also known as Nakpanduri Terror, said his lawyer, George Assamaney, was not around.

The court said it had not received any information from the counsel and would, therefore, proceed with the case.

The state attorney in the case was Marina Opare-Appiah.

The case was subsequently adjourned to May 21, 2012, for the court to acquire the services of an interpreter.

The accused person allegedly killed two policemen, Constable Prince Kwaku Agyare and Constable Owusu Frimpong, in 2010 and wounded another in Nakpanduri before escaping to Togo.

Kombian, it would be recalled, was sentenced to 13 years by an Accra Circuit Court after he broke jail at Gambaga and later at Tamale Prisons where he was being held in connection with various offences.

After his second jail break, he went into hiding in Togo and was re-arrested by Interpol in Togo and handed over to the Ghanaian authorities.

Apart from the alleged murder of the police officers, Kombian is believed to have killed some of his victims mostly at Nakpanduri, after robbing them at gunpoint and terrorizing the residents of the area.

Kombian had, until his arrest, eluded the police by shuttling between Ghana, Togo and Burkina, and was to be charged with murder, attempted murder, possessing of firearms without lawful authority and stealing among others.

The serial jail breaker was serving a five-year jail term for a previous escape and was awaiting trial for attempted murder as well as other robberies.
