It’s only been a few days since Kanye West began his?Yeezus?tour in Seattle on Saturday night, and his performance is already generating controversy. Performing a staggering two-hour set from an on-stage mountain, West brought up a Jesus Christ impersonator for several songs, causing some to question the artist’s creative expression.

In an interview with San Francisco radio station Wild 94.9, West responded to the questionable decision saying, “What’s awesome about Christianity is that we’re able to portray God. We’re allowed to draw an image of him…One of the things that I really wanted to get across with that, is that you can have a relationship with Jesus. You can talk to Jesus. In the same way someone would have a ‘Jesus is my homeboy’ [T-shirt], this is the way I would express it.”

Despite West’s extensive explanation, the notorious rapper admitted that fiancee Kim Kardashian also raised questions about the appropriateness of a Jesus lookalike. In response, West continued: “Any time the word ‘Jesus’ can be used more in our lives, it’s a good thing…With my heroes, people want to be like Mike. I want to be like Jesus.”

Rounding out the questions about Kanye’s performance is his use of “White Jesus” as the billing credit for the lookalike performer. Seemingly amused by the objection, West commented, “It’s funny because you hear the term ‘Black Jesus’ all the time, but you never hear the term ‘White Jesus’…You know it’s just some Kanye West sh*t, really.”

What do you think, SodaHeads? Is West’s Jesus impersonator offensive or just another Kanye-ism that we simply need to ignore? Do you think artists should be more sensitive with portraying religious figures, or should they be allowed extensive creative freedom?
