President John Dramani Mahama on Monday swore-in Mr Justice Yaw Appau as the Sole Commissioner of Judgment Debts with a call on public servants and other relevant organizations to cooperate with him by providing information.

He said judgment debts had assumed national dimension and attracted so much public interest that there was the need to initiate measures that would stem the haphazard manner in which these debts were paid.

President Mahama reiterated the government?s commitment to fight corruption and other malfeasance in the public sector.

The Sole Commissioner is mandated to among other things investigate issues concerning the payment of debts, their foundations and viability and make recommendation to government to take action on such issues.

President Mahama said the establishment of the Office of Sole Commissioner was to help avoid the mistakes of the past where certain debts were recommended for payment without any reference to cabinet and other higher offices.

He said: ?There is the need to re-fashion the whole programme of judgment debts in terms of contracting among other issues and Mr Justice Appau is a man with unquestioned integrity who I believe can deal with these issues.?

Mr Justice Appau promised to work to meet the desires and expectations of all Ghanaians.

?I am not the best in the country but President has given me that recognition and I promise to work up to the expectation of Ghanaians and justify the confidence President Mahama has reposed in me in this duty,? he said.
