Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated the five presidential candidates contesting in Togo’s April 25 presidential elections for conducting their campaigns peacefully and in mutual respect.
Mahama who is also the current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was speaking on Monday during his second visit to Lome in less than a month.
The ECOWAS chairman and his delegation held talks with the candidates and the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) over the issue of ballot papers and the mode of transmitting results.
Mahama urged candidates, who include incumbent President Faure Gnassingbe and his main challenger Jean-Pierre Fabre, to respect results announced by CENI and by it alone.
“Any eventual dispute should be resolved through constitutional means,” he reiterated.
When he last visited Togo on March 24, Mahama proposed a 10 day postponement of the Togolese presidential elections that had been scheduled for April 15, 2015.
The ten day extension enabled CENI, experts from the International Organization of the Francophonie and representatives of candidates to consolidate the electoral register. Enditem
