Jobs for Photographers

The Western Regional Branch of the Ghana Union of Professional Photographers (GUPP) has called for transparency in the tendering and bidding processes for employment opportunities in the sector.

The association noted that members are not benefitting from government contracts such as photography for the National Identification Cards, National Health Insurance Cards at the district level, Public and Private Educational Institutions of all levels as well as the  Ministry of Health ?staff and patients of hospitals, clinics? among others.

In a statement issued and signed by Mr. Bartholomew Ofori, the Western Regional Chairman of GNUPP, members not getting contracts has led to low business opportunities, a drop in sales and consequently net profit, as well as shrinking of businesses instead of expansion –leading to low job-creation.

The association pointed out that involving the GNUPP will lead to a significant growth in business for members and create employment opportunities for the youth.

According to the statement, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) lack the use of information sources on tenders and tendering opportunities.

?There is also a clear gap between smaller and large enterprises in their chances of accessing information on businesses,? the statement added.

The statement added that members of the association have attended several training modules and workshops to upgrade themselves in this technological era — ?We are abreast with any new trend in our Job?.

?Even on-line registration for West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is now handled by private individuals who are not members of the association,? he said.

The statement said photography-assignment within the country is large ? ?however, we are not able to get even 5% of these contracts, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) can also encourage the Ghana Education Service within the region to use our association for better service delivery.

?Most of the youth see our job as unattractive ? we urge all photographers in the region and the country at large to come together to improve upon themselves and expand their business,? the statement concluded.
