Ird And Nmimr Discovers New Malaria Prevention Strategies

malaria preventionThe French Institute for Research and Development (IRD) and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) have developed new strategies for the prevention of malaria.

The development of the strategies was led by Dr Nicaise Ndam, Molecular Parasitologist at IRD, and Dr Michael Ofori ?at Noguchi.

A statement copied to the Daily Graphic said the project was officially launched on January 31, 2014 at a ceremony hosted by the Ambassador of France, Frederic Clavier, and the Director of ?Noguchi ?and ?witnessed by the Ghanaian government and distinguished representatives from IRD in France.

It said the project was being supported by the French Agency for Research and Development (AIRD) to promote activities on vaccine research and capacity building.

Collaboration

The collaboration between the two institutes falls under the memorandum for scientific and technical cooperation signed in 2010 by the University of Ghana and the IRD.

IRD is a French research organisation, original and unique in the European research landscape for development.

It favours interdisciplinarity and its main research, for over 65 years, focuses on the relationship between human and environment in Africa, the Mediterranean, Latin America, Asia and in the French overseas tropical territories.

IRD?s research training and innovation are intended to contribute to social, economic and environmental development ?of countries co-operating and partnering with foreign institutions and research organisations ?well known for their skills, like the Noguchi.

France has made scientific co-operation and research a key element of its international development policy.

In Ghana, the French government is working on establishing, over the long term, networks and partnerships offering opportunities to develop new programmes and projects.
