IMF and EAC Conference in Arusha to Discuss Deepening Economic Integration

ARUSHA, Tanzania, February 21, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) will host a conference in Arusha, Tanzania, on February 27-28, 2012, to discuss the EAC’s achievements, the benefits of regional integration, and future macroeconomic challenges faced by the region.

The conference, entitled “The East African Community after 10 Years: Deepening EAC Integration,” will be sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and co-chaired by IMF Deputy Managing Director Naoyuki Shinohara and EAC Secretary General, Dr. Richard Sezibera. “I very much look forward to meeting policymakers, business leaders, academics and civil society in Arusha on February 27-28 to discuss regional integration,” Mr. Shinohara said. “The Arusha conference offers a forum for key policy makers and experts to explore ways to deepen economic integration and thus open new opportunities for the region.”

The conference, which will bring together Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from EAC members Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as from South Sudan, is being held as the EAC enters its second decade. Participants, including senior leaders from governments, central banks, and the private sector, as well as civil society and academia, will discuss factors affecting growth in the EAC and draw lessons for policymakers. By bringing together a diverse group of speakers and participants, the conference will seek to draw lessons from the first decade of the EAC and recent international experience to overcome the challenges of economic integration.
