The usual traffic that takes over the town and sales that goes on has fallen drastically as compared to last year which was also considered a dry Christmas.

Despite this unfortunate development, the Rotary Club of Ho as part of its end of year activities organized a festival of nine lessons and carols in Ho recently, which stimulate the a feel of the Christmas euphoria to residents.

The event which was held at the Ho Polytechnic SRC Hall attracted choirs of various churches in the regional capital, both charismatic and orthodox. The service also attracted dignitaries and other Christian leaders in the region.

The event was on the theme; ?Lighting up Education and Sanitation through the Birth of Christ.? In a brief sermon; the Rev.? Frank Anku, of the E.P University College and the Minister of the Kekeli EP Church, urged Christians to practice the virtues that come with the season to drive societal change. He added that just as people become happy for the joy of the season they should also ensure the issues of sanitation and education are giving adequate attention and improvement.

The President of the Club, Rockson Dogbegah reiterated the need for Ghana to make education it?s number one priority and hence restructure it to make it the best in Africa and the world as a whole. He said since government could not should this burden alone, Ghanaians should lead the crusade for quality education and support every initiative towards that to improve the current system.

He bemoaned the fact that the current education system produces stereotypes instead of analytic, creative and outstanding graduates for the job market and the economy as a whole.

He also stressed the need for improved sanitation and education on cleanliness and good sanitary practices to save lives, increase productivity and eventually improve the ailing economy. He therefore urged the urgent need for these intervention since the ??falling standards of education and poor sanitation confronting the country is a recipe for disaster.?

To this end, he announced that Rotary in its own way have instituted an education award scheme to award, teachers, schools, students and communities who play outstanding role in improving education in the Volta Region. It has also, in collaboration with the Volta Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other organizations is to implement the ?Volta Read Project.? The project seeks to improve reading among students. It will provide reading materials and mentor teachers on ways of teaching pupils how to read.

Reading clubs and other educational support initiatives are far advanced in the offing in the coming year he added. Choristers for the event were from the Kekeli E.P Church, RIIS Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Assemblies of God Church and the E.P University College Choir.
