Gwcl Launched Water Test Kits

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has launched World Water Monitoring Challenge (WWMC) test kits for an improved independency of quality control within the use of treated and raw water.

New PictureThe National Water Policy of Ghana clearly captures the need to increase the coverage drinking water supply nationally with special emphasis on the poor who pay more for water supply services whilst receiving poor water quality.

However, lack of access to clean water and sanitation systems are a central public health concern in Ghana.

In order to improve the situation, a capacity building in water quality monitoring and surveillance project has been instituted in Ghana World Water Monitoring Challenge to raise awareness on the importance of water quality within the Ghanaian society.

The project will contribute towards improved health of the Ghanaian population by ensuring high quality, sustainable national water quality testing, monitoring and surveillance within the services areas of Ghana Water Company.

According to the Managing Director of GWCL, Mr. G. Dovlo assured of GWCL?s commitment towards water improvement in the country.

He concurs with the fact that there is a widespread concern raised about water quality, which is mostly affected by pollution through illegal mining, sand winning, tree felling and unscientific methods of farming and fishing have negatively impacted these water bodies.

Mr. Dovlo admitted that ?This situation poses great operational problems for GWCL especially with respect to the high production cost incurred in the use of increased tonnage of chemicals at our treatment plants.?

He was optimistic that the project would help manage the long standing?pollution issues the company has been grappling with.

Poor quality of raw water, he said is posing problems to the company, hence the need to launch the water monitoring kits to help create awareness and address the thorny problems facing the company as far as service delivery is concern.

Mr. Frederick Addae, Director of Water at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, who represented the Sector Minister, Hon. Collins Dauda noted that government?s vision to providing water for all by 2025 would hit the rocks should it failed to meet the target of providing good quality water.

?It is therefore imperative to ensure that in our drive towards a hundred per cent water coverage, quality is not sacrificed,? he added.

He averred that lack of?safe water?was a health concern since it played a pivotal role as an agent in the spread of diseases as well as putting unnecessary pressure on health facilities.

The Minister noted that the deteriorating quality of our waters being in its raw state or treated for domestic and commercial use is important so the need to ensure the element of sustainability on how to engage school children and members of the society to ensure keeping on educating them on how to keep our waters.

He also indicated that rapid increase of urbanization is putting much pressure on the demands for good water which GWCL is unable to meet.

The Minister mentioned that the project is important to improve water quality as it will involve the public and school children especially.

The awareness creation part of the project begun in 2012 with the idea of increasing public awareness within water quality and public health, improving coordination between water supply management institutes and public health institutes and strengthening cooperation between research institutes and organizations responsible.

The WWMC is an EU supported project aimed at improving water quality and health situation in Ghana. Experts say, it would also ensure high quality, sustainable national?water quality testing, monitoring and surveillance within the service areas of the company.

Consumers could also test?the water quality by themselves using the kits.
