Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, has stressed the need for legal backing for the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to enforce compliance of calibration.GSA

The GSA must strongly be empowered by law to compel both private and statutory bodies, particularly hospitals and other health facilities and organisations in the food industry, to calibrate their machines and equipment according for national health and safety, Mr Adjei said.

He said the issue was vital for every facet of national life and, therefore, urged the GSA Board to submit a proposal for consideration by Government to pass into law, so that neither private nor government institutions could operate without periodically going through the process of calibration.

Mr Adjei was speaking at a sensitisation workshop organised by the GSA on ?Metrology and Benefits of Calibration? to sensitise hospital managers and administrators, municipal/district chief executives and the media in Sunyani.

To ensure calibration compliance, Mr Adjei suggested that metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies could make bye-laws so that periodically they would invite officials of GSA from the regional offices to go round with task force for inspection.

He appealed to the media, especially the radio stations, to also assist by providing airtime for officials of the authority to educate the public on its functions or services during morning talk shows.

Mr Mohammed Umaru, Deputy Head of Dimensional Calibration Laboratory of GSA, who was the resource person, said the GSAs three divisions of Metrology were Scientific, Legal and Industrial.

Metrology is the science of measurements which is essential to nearly all aspects of human endeavor as it is used in activities including manufacturing/production, science /education, health and safety, agriculture, trade/commerce, testing and calibration, determination of environmental quality as well as quality assessment of goods and services.

He said accurate and reliable measurements were the starting point and heart of quality, ?hence the need for regular calibration of test and measuring equipment aimed at quality assurance of goods and services for better life?.
