Says their hard work and achievement at the Games should be recognised

A pro-democracy and anti-corruption group, Conscience Nigeria (CN), has urged the Federal Government to honour athletes who won medals at the just-concluded Paralympic games in London.

CN, in a press statement signed by its Executive Director, Tosin Adeyanju, called for a befitting reception for the country’s Paralympic team which outshone the country’s Olympic team.

While the Paralympic team came back with six gold, five silver and two bronze medals, the 2012 olympics team did not win a medal.

“We are urging President Goodluck Jonathan to organise a befitting reception for the victorious Paralympic team for putting smiles on the faces of Nigerians and excelling where others failed,” the statement read.

“This is the time for the country to justify excellent and patriotic service with good rewards.”

Such honours, according to the group, would help to revive the spirit of dedication and commitment among sports men and women, and spur others to do well in future competitions.

The group also noted that the situation presents an opportunity for the government to improve the dwindling sports sector.

“Reward for good service and excellence”, according to Adeyanju, would propel the sector towards success.

?We are urging that they should be given national honours and adequately rewarded for achieving a great feat,? the statement added.
