Government?s attempt to reduce corruption seems to be woefully unsatisfactory and the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Torgbe Afede XIV, has urged the Mahama administration to intensify its battle against the canker.

According to him, the spate of corruption in the country, particularly those connected with public office holders, was becoming worrying because ?it could have a negative toll on the country?s development goals.?

Togbe Afede, who is also the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, added that ??corrupt officials are like termites at woodwork; they eat at the very foundations of our future development. Their behaviour and their methods undermine our march towards greatness?.

He therefore stressed, ?The government must intensify the battle against corruption.?

The chief, who is also a business magnate, made the observation when he addressed the annual grand durbar of chiefs and people of the area to climax this year?s yam festival in Ho, the regional capital.

This year?s event was under the theme, ?Let?s Make Our Nation Great and Strong.? The event, which marked the 11th anniversary of the enthronement of Togbe Afede, also showcased the rich and beautiful culture and traditions of the Asogli State through music, dance, stories, rituals, rich Kente cloths among others.

The traditional ruler charged the government to develop the right systems that all citizens must support to revamp the fortunes of the country.

Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, who graced the occasion, urged traditional leaders to use festivals to kindle development in their areas and Ghana as a whole, particularly in agriculture, tourism, hospitality and infrastructure development.

The vice president, who was in the company of Prosper Bani, Chief of Staff, some ministers of state and Members of Parliament (MPs)?as well as National Democratic Congress (NDC) activists, reiterated the promise to complete the abandoned portions of the Eastern Corridor road, Ho Adidome road and other stalled projects.

Mr. Amissah-Arthur also expressed the government?s commitment towards the completion of two abandoned projects in Ho ? an office complex for the Centre for National Culture and a regional library ? both of which have been under construction for more than 10 years now.

The Asogli State Yam Festival is celebrated every September to thank God Almighty, the gods and the ancestors for a bumper harvest. It is also a period of prayers for good health and prosperity for the coming year.

The occasion, which is used to foster unity through forgiveness and reconciliation, also facilitates stocktaking.

During the period the chiefs and the people also re-affirm allegiance to the Agbogbome stool. This year some of the programmes included a pilgrimage to the ancestral home of the Ewes, Nortsie in Togo.
