The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has assured Nigerians that his ministry would use the Global Fund grants to reduce the burden of diseases and improve the quality of life.

Chukwu gave the assurance in Uyo on Friday at the Country Coordinating Mechanism, a three-day retreat with the theme, “Breaking Challenges for Improved Funding.”

He said the burden of disease as a result of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria was too much on individuals to bear.

He advised all stakeholders to do their utmost to ensure that the burden of these diseases is reduced.

Chukwu said the Global Fund had allotted $1.14bn for the three diseases:

HIV/AIDS ($477.4m), tuberculosis ($160. 5m) and malaria ($499.5m).

The Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, while declaring the retreat open, said the state had always paid its counterpart funding as at when due.
