Ghana’s NHIS to serve as a model for Senegal

A Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of the NHIA, Mr. Nathaniel Otoo said the Senegalese delegation to Ghana offered good suggestions to improve their NHIS.

New Picture New PictureAccording to him, Ghana?s best practices in the National Health Insurance system and continues to serve as a black star ?to governments across the Sub-sahara African.

He hinted that a lot of room to cover still and we have a lot of improvement to do and one thing that these delegations bring is also a critique from a point of view that is independent of the system that we have in Ghana.

He admitted that some of the improvements made in the NHIS have been a result of suggestions from other relevant stakeholders in the health sector from within and outside Ghana.

Mr. Otoo said the NHIA never pretended to know everything and called for constructive criticisms to improve the system.

Several delegations from the continent have so far visited Ghana?s National Health Insurance Authority to study how the programme works.?Latest to visit the NHIA was a nine member Senegalese government delegation to Ghana.

The delegation paid a three-day working visit to understudy Ghana?s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The tour offered the Senegalese delegation the opportunity to nurture their one year old health insurance scheme.

Through an interpreter, leader of the nine member delegation and also Senegal?s Deputy Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Mame Abdoulaye Gueye told the media Ghana deserved commendation for its outstanding health insurance system.

He said the services of experts from Ghana?s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) will be required to make their newly established NHIS a success.

According to him, the President of Senegal impressed upon the health ministry to tap the expertise of the Ghanaian model to ensure that the level of coverage moved from 20% to 60%, hence the visit to Ghana.

?Because we are supposed to grow the coverage as far high up to 60% we saw that it was a great challenge and there was indeed the need for us to go somewhere where we can get best practices of how to be able to grow the coverage.?

?That is the reason why we have come over to Ghana to be able to take a look at Ghana?s best practices in national health insurance and to see what lessons we can learn from the Ghanaian model?? he stressed.

“?they mustlearn ?lessons from the Ghanaian experience but particularly to be able to know the difficulties and the challenges that Ghana is having in its system so that we don?t go about reinventing the wheel and going through certain problems that Ghana may have had.?
