Parliament has approved the nomination of Nana Oye Lithur as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.

In his contribution to the debate on her nomination on the floor of the House, Mr Mahama  Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central, called for a rights-based approach to protect the vulnerable in society.

He said no Ghanaian has the right to engage in homosexual conduct but there is the need to avoid prejudices against people who engage in it.

The Appointments Committee of Parliament in their recommendation to the House had approved by consensus the five ministerial nominees who had appeared before it for vetting.

They are Mrs Nana Oye Lithur, as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mr Akwasi Oppong Fosu, Minister-designate for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as Minister-designate for Education.

The rest are Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei as Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Dr Edward Omane Boamah for the Communications Ministry.

On Nana Oye Lithur, a known human rights activists, the Committee in their recommendation said she had stated that when she appeared before it that she would not promote homosexuality but will protect the rights of gays and has also called for a national debate on the issue.
